Genealogy is the study and tracing of family pedigrees which involves collecting the names of relatives and establishing the relationships between them based on circumstantial evidence or documentation, thus building up a cohesive family tree. Genealogy is sometimes also referred to as family history, although sometimes involves more life histories of the individuals involved.

There wasn't much interest in searching the family roots among our last generation. It may be because our parents have many brothers and sisters, and most of them live in nearby communities. So they were able to come together for major events in the family and festivals. Now most of the families have one or two children and families are displaced because of the flight for survival and search for better opportunities. The distance, cultural and language diffences, and busy life style make it difficult to keep the contacts for the new generation. It has a bigger influence in families in Kerala because most of the families have at least one member living abroad. So recent interest in family history projects are understandable.

Searching history is a difficult task because there is not much documents or primary evidence to establish the links between families. Church records and land records can be available in some cases but it is a tedious task. Most of us didn't use the opportunity to ask our own parents or grand parents about our family roots. So we may have to satisty with circumstancial evidences and conflicting stories from oral historians.

Searching for family history is an intersting journey. Actually it is a seach for one's own identity. Who am I? We may be become something now. Still it is good to know who we are! This is a way of ownering our ancestors. At the same time, we hope this is a service to future generation.
